In August 2006, The Placid Pet (originally a self-proprietorship) was founded as a pet sitting and daily dog walking service provider for Whatcom County and parts of Skagit County including Bellingham, Blaine, Ferndale, Lynden and Sedro-Woolley.  On January 1, 2007, The Placid Pet, Inc., a Washington State corporation, was formed.  In 2008, The Placid Pet expanded it's service area to include Mount Vernon, Burlington and Anacortes.

The Placid Pet provides a select group of individuals the opportunity to pursue a part-time vocation that "feeds the soul" by combining an interest in the nurture and well-being of domestic pets with a love of the great outdoors.

The Placid Pet was also created to be an organization that would make "giving back" to the community a business principal.  2% of our gross monthly receipts are donated to the Whatcom Humane Society (WHS) and the Alternative Humane Society of Whatcom County (AHS). We also donate the cost of server space and Web site development for The Grateful Dogs Off-Leash Association.  In addition, special one-time discounts are available for families who have recently adopted pets from a local humane society including WHS, AHS and the Humane Society of Skagit Valley.

Our clients put an enormous amount of trust in The Placid Pet.  We are given access to homes and charged with keeping pets -- members of the family -- safe at all times. Therefore, all potential employees of The Placid Pet are interviewed and carefully screened. Comprehensive reference and background checks are performed before a new employee is hired. The Placid Pet has contracted with EasyBackgrounds.com to perform in-depth custom searches of county, state and federal criminal databases on each potential employee.  A driving history search is also performed.

Tresa and Beatrice

Tresa Mariotto, Pet Care Provider
Bellingham, WA

Tresa Mariotto is available for pet care throughout the Bellingham area.

Tresa was born and raised in Nebraska.  She was the middle child of 13 legally adopted children raised by a father who was a first generation son of German immigrants and a mother of Swedish descent.  Her childhood was filled with a variety of animals, beginning a life-long love of animals and appreciation for their care. When Tresa was a teenager, the family moved to the Pacific Northwest (where her mother was from) so that the children – being of all races – would have a better chance at life. The family settled in Spokane, Washington in 1975.

Tresa, with a passion for reading, always enjoyed school and excelled in academics.  She also excelled in extra-curricular activities including student government and varsity sports.  Today she still enjoys long-distance running, and runs with her dogs (and canine clients) on a daily basis.

Tresa is a graduate of Western Washington University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology.

Tresa’s family currently includes four dogs and one cat: Beatrice, an older Terrier Mix; Big Pappa, a Black Labrador Mix; Ruger a Long-haired Dachshund; Prudence, a Short-haired Dachshund; and an apple-faced Siamese named Ferguson, who (if she could read) would be quite annoyed to be listed after the dogs.

Tresa is certified by the American Red Cross in Pet First Aid and CPR.

Tresa joined The Placid Pet in September 2007.

Amanda, Mary Jane and Chase Amanda Huber, Pet Care Provider
Bellingham, WA and vicinity

Amanda is available for pet care in and around Bellingham.

Amanda grew up just outside the city limits of Wenatchee, WA on 9 acres.  Her family has owned horses, cows, pigs, goats, cats, rodents, sheep, dogs, chickens, ducks, bunnies, and reptiles; Amanda knows how to care for all of them.  She started riding horses when she was 5 and showed her Quarter horse through 4-H, county fairs and the state circuit from the age of 9 to 14.  She also raised pigs and took them to the county fairs.

She currently has one “child”, a Chow, Lab, German Shepherd mix named Mary Jane (like Mary Jane Watson from Spiderman) and one Beta named Fishy.  Almost all of her pets have been rescued.   If she could, she’d rescue, house and care for as many animals as possible.  During her free time she enjoys playing and hiking with Mary Jane, going out to eat, snowboarding, photography, dirt biking, watching movies with friends and hanging out with her boyfriend of four years, Chase.

Amanda currently attends Whatcom Community College.  She’s not positive what she wants to do yet, but one day she would love to start her own business like the Placid Pet, Inc.  She would also like to write and propose a bill to make punishment for animal cruelty harsher.  She’s a nurturer and I’m sure she’d love to care for your pet.

Amanda is certified by the American Red Cross in Pet First Aid and CPR.

Amanda joined The Placid Pet, Inc. in January 2008.

Sue and Annie

Sue Mitchell, Pet Care Provider
Burlington, WA

Born and raised on a rice farm in California's Sacramento Valley, the best friends throughout Sue's life have been dogs and cats. She attended the University of Idaho and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Bacteriology. Later she attended Western Washington University's School of Journalism earning a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Sue lived in Seattle for 27 years and ran a pet sitting and gardening business for the last nine. The 24/7 life and the ever increasing population density of the city became too much. In July 2007, her partner, David Saxton (also a Placid Pet employee), found a few peaceful acres along Friday Creek near Alger.

Sue looks forward to making more new "best friends" via The Placid Pet.

Sue joined The Placid Pet in April 2008.
